Frequently Asked Questions

  • We offer therapy for kids, teens, and young adults with developing brains—generally from ages 2 to around age 26.

  • Blackbird Health can precisely diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions occurring individually or in combination, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, depression, autism spectrum disorder, mood disorders, behavioral disorders such as oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), speech and language disorders, cognitive disorders, sensory motor and central nervous system disorders, and others.

  • Our skilled clinical team is ready to help with everything including therapy (e.g., CBT, DBT, ACT, CBIT, individual, family, and more), medication management, speech and language, developmental and nutritional support, executive functioning, and school-based advocacy to support IEP and 504 plans.

  • We take pride in our rapid intake process, which typically takes place within 1 week. Our goal is to move you through the intake process quickly so assessment, diagnosis, and treatment can follow without delay.

  • We offer virtual services across Pennsylvania and Virginia along with in-person services at our three clinics located in the greater Philadelphia and DC Metro areas.

  • Yes, we are in-network with all major Pennsylvania and Virginia commercial insurers, so you typically only pay a copay. Our team is committed to helping as many kids and young adults as possible, and we have worked closely with these insurance companies to ensure our services are covered throughout your journey at Blackbird Health.

  • Yes, we offer virtual and in-person therapy for kids, teens, and young adults. We offer nearly every kind of therapy (CBT, ACT, DBT, CBIT, and many others), individual and family counseling, and school and community advocacy services.

  • Yes, in addition to therapy services we offer medication management as part of our integrated care model. With your consent, we work closely with your pediatrician or family practitioner to ensure they’re in the loop with your care plan.

  • Yes, we specialize in early childhood development, including ASD or autism evaluations. Our early childhood specialists also have extensive training in behavioral disorders such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders (ADHD) and mood and anxiety disorders, and they can help differentiate ASD from other conditions.

  • Yes, we offer parent and family counseling and support as part of our integrated care model.

  • Our highly skilled clinical team consists of child and adolescent psychiatrists, psychiatric mental health certified registered nurse practitioners, psychiatric certified advanced practice registered nurses, psychiatric certified family nurse practitioners, licensed clinical social workers, licensed professional counselors, certified masters-level speech-language pathologists, and many more.

  • The typical approach to pediatric mental health care could best be described as “fail-first,” meaning you try a certain medication or therapy, and if it doesn’t work, you try something else. We choose an “understand-first” approach instead, analyzing the full spectrum of cognitive, behavioral, physical, genetic, and developmental factors to uncover the root cause of symptoms and identify the right interventions quickly.

Kids are too often seen as their diagnosis and feel broken or flawed as a result. But there’s no one type of anxiety, depression, ADHD, or autism—there’s simply an opportunity for a deeper understanding of how each kid is built, and how to make their quality of life the best it can be by focusing on their strengths and capabilities.

  • Our “understand first” evaluation process is a comprehensive and supportive exploration of strengths, uniqueness, and challenges and may include diagnostic psychiatric evaluation, cognitive testing, speech and language evaluation, occupational therapy evaluation, autism evaluation, and pharmacogenetic assessment. We work with you to incorporate any past evaluations, assessments, and testing you may have had while acquiring the most current information to get to the root cause of your symptoms and determine the best course of treatment.
