Why Northern Virginia Families Are Seeking Help Now
You're not imagining it, Northern Virginia's children are facing a growing mental health crisis:
1 in 7 youth (ages 6-17) in Northern Virginia experience a mental health disorder each year.
37% of high school students in our region have experienced clinical anxiety or depression in the past year.
Less than half (44%) of NoVA youth with depression are receiving the treatment they need.
Virginia ranks 38th nationally in available mental health workforce, leaving families waiting months for appointments.
Meanwhile, families throughout Fairfax County, Loudoun County, Prince William County, and Arlington are watching their children struggle with focus at school, withdraw from friends, or experience behavioral challenges—despite trying therapy, medication, or school interventions that haven't led to lasting improvement.
What Makes Blackbird Health Different in Northern Virginia
We uncover what others miss
While many practices address surface symptoms, our whole-child diagnostic approach reveals the full story, including co-occurring conditions like ADHD with anxiety, or speech delays causing behavioral challenges. Our psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners conduct thorough initial evaluations, working closely with our team of child psychologists, therapists, and specialists to ensure nothing is overlooked. From our initial assessment through treatment, we look at how your child's brain works, how their body works, and how they relate to others.
The Difference Between Getting By and Getting Better
Most families we see have already tried something. Maybe your pediatrician prescribed medication that didn't quite work, maybe your child saw a therapist for months without real progress, maybe you’ve been trying things at home without success, or perhaps you're still searching for answers about what's actually causing your child's struggles.
Blackbird Health does something different: We look at the whole picture from day one.

Comprehensive Services for Children & Teens Throughout Northern Virginia
-
Is your child struggling to focus at school, forgetting assignments, or constantly fidgeting? ADHD looks different in every child, and often comes with anxiety, learning differences, or sensory challenges that traditional ADHD treatment overlooks. Our team evaluates the full picture and creates a coordinated treatment plan that addresses all your child's needs, not just the most obvious symptom.
-
If something feels "off" about how your child develops socially, communicates, or responds to their environment, an autism evaluation can provide clarity. Blackbird Health's comprehensive autism assessments look beyond checklists to understand your child's unique strengths and challenges, giving you actionable answers and a clear path forward. Most families are scheduled within 4 weeks, compared to the 18-24 month wait typical at other Northern Virginia providers.
-
Our licensed child psychologists are part of your child's comprehensive care team, specializing in specialized psychological testing, evidence-based therapy, and consultation on complex cases. While most initial evaluations are conducted by our psychiatric nurse practitioners, our psychologists work alongside NPs to provide specialized assessments when needed, understanding developmental stages, school pressures unique to Northern Virginia's competitive academic environment, and how to help kids build skills they'll use for life.
-
From anxiety and depression to OCD, trauma, and behavioral challenges, Blackbird Health treats the full range of childhood mental health conditions. We accept most major insurance plans (including Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Carefirst, and Anthem) and work with families to make care accessible. The teenage years come with unique pressures, from social media stress to college prep anxiety to questions about identity. Our therapists create a judgment-free space where teens can process what they're feeling and build coping skills that actually work in their real lives.
How it works
How We Help Northern Virginia Families: From First Call to Lasting Relief
Step 1
Schedule Your Initial Evaluation
Fill out our online inquiry form or call our Vienna office. We'll gather basic information, verify your insurance, and schedule your child's comprehensive evaluation, typically within 2-3 weeks, not the 3-6 months you'll wait elsewhere in Northern Virginia.
Step 2
Comprehensive Assessment (2 Sessions)
Unlike rushed 15-minute appointments, our psychiatric nurse practitioners and psychologists spend real time understanding your child. We look at medical history, developmental milestones, school performance, family dynamics, and any previous treatments. We coordinate with your pediatrician and school when helpful.
Most initial evaluations are conducted by our experienced psychiatric nurse practitioners, who specialize in pediatric mental health and comprehensive diagnostic assessments. Our child psychologists are available for specialized testing, ongoing therapy, and consultation on complex cases.
Step 4
Coordinated Treatment Plan
Based on your child's unique needs, we'll create a treatment plan that might include therapy, medication management, play therapy, or other services, all coordinated by one team who talks to each other. You're not juggling five different providers who've never met.
Step 3
Get Clear Answers
You'll receive a clear diagnosis and understand whether there's more than one thing contributing to your child's challenges, including any co-occurring conditions others may have missed. No medical jargon, just clear answers about why your child is struggling and what will actually help..
Step 5
Ongoing Support
Your child's care team stays in close communication. As progress happens (or if something isn't working), we adjust the plan together. We also support you as a parent throughout the process, because family support makes everything more effective.
How Blackbird Health Compares to Other Options in Northern Virginia
Questions Northern Virginia Parents Ask Us
-
Blackbird Health accepts most major insurance plans including Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Optum, Carefirst, Highmark, Anthem, Capital, and Independence. We're in-network, which means lower out-of-pocket costs for you. Call us to verify your specific plan.
-
Most families are scheduled for their initial evaluation within 2-3 weeks of contacting us. This is significantly faster than the 3-6 month wait times common at other pediatric mental health practices in Northern Virginia.
-
Both! Most of our clinicians are hybrid, seeing patients both in-clinic and virtually. Some families do their initial evaluation in person, then switch to virtual appointments for ongoing therapy when it's more convenient. You choose what works best for your family.
-
Blackbird Health serves children, teens, and young adults ages 2+. Whether your toddler is showing early developmental concerns or your college student is struggling with anxiety, we can help.
-
This is exactly why we do comprehensive evaluations. Often, treatments fail because an underlying condition was missed—like a child treated for anxiety who actually has ADHD causing the anxious feelings, or a teen with depression who has an undiagnosed learning disability causing hopelessness about school. When we identify and treat all the factors contributing to your child's struggles, outcomes improve dramatically.
-
Very. Parents are integral to treatment success at Blackbird Health. We teach you strategies to support your child, keep you informed about progress, and coordinate with schools or pediatricians when helpful (with your permission).
-
Three things: (1) Our whole-child approach uncovers co-occurring conditions others miss, (2) We offer all services under one roof with a coordinated care team, and (3) 85% of our patients see meaningful improvement within 6-12 weeks because we're treating root causes, not just symptoms.
-
Yes, when helpful. We offer school advocacy services and can help communicate with pediatricians and other providers involved in your child's care. This coordination ensures everyone is working toward the same goals and your child isn't getting conflicting advice.
-
Psychiatric nurse practitioners (NPs) are advanced practice registered nurses with specialized training in mental health. They can diagnose conditions, prescribe medication, and conduct comprehensive evaluations. Most initial evaluations at Blackbird Health are performed by our experienced psychiatric NPs, who specialize in pediatric mental health.
Child psychologists hold doctoral degrees (PhD or PsyD) and specialize in psychological testing, assessment, and therapy. At Blackbird Health, our psychologists work alongside NPs as part of your child's care team, providing specialized testing, ongoing therapy, and consultation on complex cases. This coordinated approach ensures your child benefits from multiple areas of expertise.
