What is child therapy at Blackbird Health?

Child therapy at Blackbird Health goes beyond addressing surface symptoms. We provide individual therapy (including cognitive behavioral therapy, play therapy, and trauma-focused care), comprehensive evaluations to identify what's really causing your child's challenges, medication management when needed, and family support services—all coordinated under one roof.

Our whole-child approach examines how your child's brain, body, and behavior interact. This allows us to identify co-occurring conditions that are often missed when these areas are assessed separately, leading to more effective treatment from the start.

Why families in the Lehigh Valley choose Blackbird Health

  • Faster access to care in the Lehigh Valley

While other Lehigh Valley providers have 3-6 month wait times, most families at Blackbird Health are scheduled within 2-3 weeks. When your child is struggling with school refusal at Parkland School District, behavioral issues at Allentown School District, or withdrawal from activities, waiting months isn't an option.

  • We uncover the full story behind your child's struggles

In our practice, 89% of children we evaluate have more than one condition affecting them. Our comprehensive assessment identifies how conditions like ADHD, anxiety, sensory processing differences, or learning challenges overlap—so treatment addresses the root causes, not just the symptoms.

  • A coordinated team of specialists working together

Our psychiatric nurse practitioners, child psychologists, therapists, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists actually communicate about your child's care. Nothing falls through the cracks.

  • Real, lasting improvement

In our practice, 85% of patients see meaningful improvement in symptoms within 6-12 weeks.* Your child gains real skills to feel better, function better, and keep improving over time—often with fewer medications than initially expected.

  • Support for parents and caregivers

We offer parent coaching and individual therapy for caregivers. You're not alone in this—we equip you with strategies to support your child's progress at home.

How child therapy at Blackbird Health works

Step 1

Tell us about your child (inquiry form)

Complete our brief inquiry form sharing what your child is experiencing, their history, and your goals. We'll verify insurance coverage and match you with the right provider.

Step 2

Step 2: Comprehensive evaluation (90 minutes, virtual)

Your child meets with a psychiatric nurse practitioner for a thorough assessment. We examine their medical history, development, school experience, and family dynamics. We observe how they think, communicate, and respond. If additional specialized testing is needed (speech, occupational therapy, autism evaluation), we'll recommend next steps.

Step 4

Begin therapy and ongoing care

Your child starts working with the right specialists—whether that's individual therapy, medication management, occupational therapy, or family support. We partner with you over time, meeting at least every three months to track progress and adjust as needed.

Step 3

Treatment plan review

You'll learn your child's diagnosis, what's contributing to their challenges, and what type of treatment will help. You'll leave with a clear plan, measurable goals, and a team ready to support your family.

What Lehigh Valley families are saying

Frequently asked questions

  • Most families are scheduled within 2-3 weeks for their initial evaluation. This is significantly faster than the 3-6 month wait times typical at other Lehigh Valley mental health providers. Many families can begin therapy after their first visit.

  • Yes. Our Allentown clinic offers in-person care, and all services are available virtually throughout Pennsylvania. Initial evaluations are conducted virtually to observe your child in their natural environment, which often provides meaningful insight. Ongoing therapy and appointments can be in-person or virtual based on clinical recommendation and family preference.

  • We provide care for children, teens, and young adults ages 2-26.

  • Your first appointment lasts up to 90 minutes. This extended time allows us to truly understand your child's history, observe their behavior, and begin a thorough assessment. Additional specialized testing (if needed) is scheduled separately.

  • That's exactly what we're designed for. In our practice, 89% of children we evaluate have co-occurring conditions. Our comprehensive assessment uncovers what others miss—like when ADHD and anxiety overlap, or when sensory processing differences contribute to behavioral challenges.

  • Yes. Our evaluations provide documentation that can be shared with schools. We can work with you to pursue appropriate 504 plans or IEP accommodations. With your permission, we can also communicate directly with school counselors, teachers, or special education teams to advocate for your child's needs.

  • Yes. We work closely with pediatricians throughout the Lehigh Valley. Many local pediatricians refer to our practice because of our comprehensive approach and faster access to care. With your permission, we'll share relevant information with your child's pediatrician to ensure coordinated care.

  • Three key differences: (1) We look at how your child's brain, body, and behavior work together to identify root causes, not just symptoms. (2) Our team of specialists—psychiatric nurse practitioners, therapists, psychologists, OTs, and SLPs—actually communicate about your child's care. (3) You get faster access to comprehensive services under one roof, rather than coordinating multiple providers across different practices.

  • We're in-network with most major insurance carriers, including Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Highmark, and Independence Blue Cross. After you complete our inquiry form, we verify your insurance coverage and let you know about any out-of-pocket costs before your first appointment.
